CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

In our factory we take our role in reducing our carbon footprint very seriously and have implemented waste management strategies to ensure all products and packaging are properly disposed of.

Our business objectives are simple, we want to create great confectionery in a manner that doesn’t exploit humans, animals or the planet. To achieve this, we work with a number of different companies who can provide services which help us to manage our waste and source products and materials that have been produced whilst respecting people and the environment.

Products

  • The meringues which are damaged in production are then re-crushed and re-entered back into the meringue mix to prevent waste.
  • Any products which are slightly damaged and do not meet retailers’ standards are sold at a discounted rate in the Lees store, allowing the local community to access Lees products for less and minimising our food waste.
  • All of our food waste is recycled, our teacakes, meringues and snowballs which are rejected and not fit for sale will be disposed of separately. Products which contain gelatine will be used for anaerobic digestion
  • Products which have been rejected and are not fit for sale will be disposed of separately.
  • Any products which do not contain gelatine are taken by the company SugaRich, who take our food waste products and repurpose them into nutritionally balanced, high performance animal feed ingredients.

Corporate Responsibility

Packaging

  • All of our recyclable waste is split between plastics and paper and is sent to Sacai Natur to be reworked into new packaging materials, closing the loop on packaging waste and contributing to the circular economy.
  • Our cardboard boxes are sourced through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to ensure they have been produced in a manner that won’t harm the environment.
  • All of the plastic tubs used for our mini products are made from virgin plastic, however, can be recycled after use.
  • Our premium meringues are sold in an rPET plastic tray which is made from 90% post-consumer waste and can be fully recycled after use.

  • We monitor our electricity and water use by recording weekly meter readings which helps to track the business’ energy use and look at areas for improvement.
