Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser Interview: Lees of Scotland shop manager prepares to mark 20 years

A dedicated and loyal employee of Lees of Scotland is approaching 20 years of service with the popular Coatbridge confectionary firm.

And Liz Cullen is “delighted” her time running the shop at the company’s North Caldeen Road factory hasn’t once again been curtailed by Covid-19 as it is able to remain open during the level four restrictions Monklands currently finds itself in.

Mum-of-two Liz, who began her time with Lees 19-and-and-a-half years ago, told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser: “When lockdown started in March the shop was closed for a while until safety precautions were introduced and I really missed our customers.

“It was so surreal not having to get up for work in the morning.

“But, thankfully, we are remaining open during the level four restrictions; we have screens up and sanitisers available, and operate a one customer at a time policy.

“The precautions are to keep customers and I safe and they’re working well.”

Liz, 49, has “absolutely loved” her time working for Lees, which began in 2001 after her spell in retail.

She said: “A family friend told me there were jobs going at Lees and the hours suited my childcare and other things.

“I started on the factory line but during the first Christmas I was paid off.

“Fortunately, I was offered a role in the hygiene department and did that for a while before going back on the line and eventually taking over the shop.

“I absolutely love running the shop. I’m in there myself and the customers keep me going; they are really lovely and tell a lot of great stories.

“We have had people come from as far afield as Canada and Australia in the past who have left lovely messages and emails to say they enjoyed their visit.

“I’m very proud to work for Lees and love telling them about that and all about Scotland as a country.”
